PUMP TERMINOLOGY

TRANSFER PUMP – designed for movement of water from one source to another

TRASH PUMP – for moving water or slurry with debris in solution – for example stones, gravel, slurry, shells etc

DIAPHRAGM PUMP – for pumping of liquids where the pump may run dry without damage to the pump

CHEMICAL PUMP – for pumping chemicals, diesel fuels etc

FIRE FIGHTER PUMP – higher pressure pumps for greater head of pressure or for portable fire fighter units

SUCTION HEAD – is the vertical distance between the surface of the water & the water inlet point on the pump.

DISCHARGE HEAD – is the vertical distance from the pump outlet to the surface of the water at its discharge point

TOTAL HEAD – is suction head + discharge head

OUTPUT (max.) – the maximum discharged output of water (this is affected by length of hoses, total head, size of hoses)
